About This Treatment
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Although often grouped with laser hair reduction, IPL uses broad-spectrum light rather than a laser. The light targets pigment in the hair to help reduce regrowth over a series of treatments. This is hair reduction, not a promise of permanent removal of every hair.
This treatment is offered for Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV (1, 2, 3, 4), from fair through light-brown skin. Your nurse practitioner will assess your skin type, hair colour, tanning history and medical history before confirming suitability. Skin type alone does not guarantee that IPL is appropriate, and darker or recently tanned skin can have a higher risk of burns or pigment changes.
IPL generally works best on darker, pigmented hair. White, grey, very light blonde and red hair may respond poorly because there is less pigment for the light to target. We will discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.

Your treatment spacing and any maintenance plan are tailored to the area, your hair growth and your response. We reassess your skin before each visit.
- Multiple sessions are needed because hair grows in cycles, and IPL targets hair most effectively during its active growth phase. A package of 6 is a treatment series, not a guarantee of complete hair removal; additional sessions may be needed.
- An annual touch-up may be needed to maintain your reduction, depending on your hair growth and individual response.
- Hormonal changes can stimulate new hair growth. If you go through hormonal changes, you may need another series of treatments rather than just a touch-up.
